Introduction to Natural Dyeing - Evening Workshop Series

130.00

This series of workshops are a hands on introduction to natural dyeing. Come to all four workshops to get an overview of different approaches, and chance to explore. Or just come to one session to taste a technique.  No fancy equipment needed - everything you learn you will be able to do at home. Focussing on non-toxic plant based processes.

I will provide some fabric at each workshop, you are also welcome to bring small quantities of your own fabric. I have a variety of fabrics you can buy by the half metre to dye with.

Week 1: Bundle Dyeing Silk & Pre- Mordanting - Tuesday 14th November

Learn how to create beautiful patterns and prints on fabric using flowers, leaves, roots, and barks through a simple steaming process. An overview of what natural dye plants you can grow in your garden or find in the hedgerow.  Explore different mordants and modifiers you can make and use for a variety of effects. Take away a dyed piece of silk.

We will pre-mordant fabric in preparation for week two.

Week 2: Natural dyeing silk and wool & shibori resist techniques. Tuesday 21st November

Learn how to extract colour from plants to dye wool and silk. An overview of how to create natural dyes from locally grown and foraged dye plants, food waste, and some plants from further afield, without using synthetic chemicals. Explore the traditional Japanese technique of Shibori fold and clamp tie-dyeing, using wooden blocks to create repeat patterns. Using different natural non-toxic methods of mordanting fabric. Come away with a dyed samples, and dye some fabric to make in to a scarf, or cushion.

Week 3: Indigo vat dyeing all natural fibres. Tuesday 28th November

A creative evening of Indigo and shibori dyeing. A practical guide to how to create and maintain an Indigo Dye Vat using Michel Garcia's organic 123 method. Create beautiful blues and patterns using Shibori resist dyeing techniques. Come away with a dyed up-cycled garment, or fabric to make in to something like a scarf, or cushion.

Week 4: Bringing techniques together. Tuesday 5th December

An evening of playing, exploration, and developing projects using the techniques explored over the weeks. Have the space to focus on a particular technique you are most drawn to, or bring the techniques together to create different colours and patterns. Over-dyeing and layering up techniques to create more difficult to achieve colours such as green, black, and purple.
